Yelapa Information

Getting to Yelapa:

The only airport serving the area is in Puerto Vallarta. Try to catch flights that arrive by 2-3pm, otherwise you may need to spend the night in PV and catch a water taxi the next day. If you have time and don't mind an hour boat ride, catch a cab from the airport to Los Muertos pier in Old Vallarta (also referred to as the Romantic Zone!) The cab fare should be US$20-25. You may be able to share one with someone else heading that way.

water taxiWater Taxi Info: At Los Muertos pier in PV, people will want to sell you a round-trip ticket. It isn't necessary and will limit your exit options when you want to depart Yelapa. A one way fare should cost 110-120 pesos and you pay the attendant who will be helping you get off the boat. It's a good idea to line up for the passage 10-15 minutes before departure to make sure you get on.

After stowing your bags up front, try to make your way as far to the stern or rear of the boat as you can, as the one hour ride will be easier on your spine if there is a choppy sea. The last water taxi from Los Muertos usually leaves around 5:30pm. There are frequent departures earlier in the day, starting at 10:30am. Tips: yelapa pier

  • You may request a life jacket but they are not usually passed out.
  • Pay the attendant who helps you out of the boat.
  • Buying a return trip ticket is not necessary and can limit your return options.
  • Fare between PV and Yelapa is 110-120 pesos per person one way.
  • Fare between Boca and Yelapa is 50-60 pesos per person one way.
  • If you are renting at Casa Anahi, be sure to get off in Yelapa at the Bahia Pier.

Bus Transport from Puerto Vallarta to Boca Tomatlan: For a shorter water taxi ride, and an enjoyable scenic drive, the bus route from Puerto Vallarta to Boca Tomatlan is fascinating. The cost is roughly 5 pesos and the cheapest way to travel. From here you can catch the water taxi for roughly 60 pesos into Yelapa which takes 25-30 minutes. Get off on the road at the Boca de Tomatlan bus stop and walk down the hill into the village and veer to the right and find the beach where the water taxis land and depart. You will sometimes get your feet wet but it is easy to board, and they were building a pier there in 2008. All the other info about round-trip tickets and sitting towards the stern still applies .

What should you bring to Yelapa:

  • It can be cool in the evenings so we recommend a sweatshirt or fleece pullover. You will mostly wear shorts and t-shirts and bathing suits during the day, but you might want to bring one pair of jeans or long pants.
  • A small flashlight for each person is a must.
  • Good walking sandals or sneakers are better than standard flip-flops if you hike up the river to the waterfall and pool.
  • Personal snorkeling gear is nice to have.
  • A day pack and a good water bottle.
  • Your favorite bug spray and sunscreen.
  • Be sure to change enough dollars to pesos at the airport or at a House of Change (Cambio) in Puerta Vallarta. There are no ATM's or banks in Yelapa, and only two higher end restaurants accept credit cards. There is a man in Yelapa who changes money but the rate will be better in PV . People all over Yelapa will accept your dollars at 10 pesos to a dollar.
